Surf and Salsa

Surf and Salsa Weekend September 18/19th
We are having our first Surf an Salsa weekend in September. The weekend is all about fun and meeting new people. Some of our Instructors are keen to learn a new skill as well.
As you probably know, salsa is the hot dance sweeping the world, from Cuba to LA to Paris and London. We would like to bring salsa to Bundoran. The package would include an intro salsa class playing tunes of Salsa, Bachata, Reggaeton, Samba etc...we will bring the Latin flavour to the surf city
We will have a surf session during the day on Saturday and in the evening we will have the Salsa class in a local hotel. After the Salsa class we aim to hit the Bridge Bar before hopefully showing off our new dance steps on the town. An optional surf is available on the Sunday if your keen.
The class will be a fun and enjoyable class. We will go through all the basic steps that will allow the students to start dancing straight away. We will also do some animation using latin pop music to keep the flow going. No partners are necessary, you can come solo. The class will be approx 1hr. It's a good opportunity to try something new and different and also a way to get to know people.
The surf and salsa classes cost €50 for both with the option of a surf on the Sunday for an extra 25euros. We are also doing Surf/Salsa and accommodation packages in the lodge for 90 (dorm)/100 (private room). If you have a group we can arrange self catering packages for a similar price.

Weekend Surf Forecast

The swell has dropped off this week but there should be a small pulse with light winds for the weekend at Tullan. There is a small clean westerly swell that should pulse in 2 foot waves at Tullan the light winds should make nice conditions. The big tides should also help things producing hollow small peaks at the cliff on low and longer walls down the beach at high. Hard to read the size of the swell but i think it will be a little bigger on Sunday with light offshores.Tullan will be the best spot all weekend, there is perfect learner waves but there should also be a few sets for the shortboarders. fingers crossed Happy surfing.

Weekend 24/25 Bundoran Surf Report

Surfing News
Looks like waves all weekend so July continues to deliver. We have a couple of spots left on our improvers course for the weekend for those looking to brush up on there surf skills.Looks like after a damp start for Saturday the weather will brighten up so we are having a BBQ/Party on Saturday night. All welcome. We have just added a new date for a new womens surf/pilates weekend info on website. For those interested in surfing in west Donegal we have a surf camp set up in Tramore beach between Ardara and Portnoo. Stunning setting and nice and quiet.

Weekend Surf Forecast

There is a fresh west/north west swell hitting over the weekend. The swell is tiny today but is due to pickup early on saturday. The winds are light south west in the morning and Tullan could be the best spot. The swell will pick up throughout the day but the wind is due to swing light onshore. The wind should be light enough to mean the waves will be well surfable. The afternoon see some decent waves at Rossnowalgh and a few sneaky ones at the reefs. On Sunday the swell will drift more northwesterly in direction and there should still be waves in the 3 foot range. The winds are also looking like light but more southerly so is looking potential good. Wont be huge but well worth getting up early.

march 12th weekend surf forecast

Surf Forecast:
It has been a better week here with surfable waves most days and sunny skies. A few people down at Tullan most evenings for after work sessions. We even got to surf the Peak one morning, the first time in nearly a month! For the weekend it looks like we will have surfable waves at Tullan on Sat and Sun but the winds are not looking great. On Sat waves at tullan should be in the 2 to 3 foot range with NW onshore winds. Surfable but it will be choppy. On Sun the conditions should be fairly similar with 2 foot waves and NW winds so choppy conditions again. The conditions for next week are looking better and we are expecting waves and better wind conditions for St. Patrick's day if you are planning a surf day in Donegal. So a poor weekend surf forecast but there will be waves for the keen.Tides this weekend high (3.4m) at 5pm and low (0.9m) at 11am Enjoy!

weekend surf forecast

Great promotion in the surf shop at the moment. 2 for the price of 1 on surf clothing. Free board bag with any new board purchased. Ends on Sunday. Click here.We also have a big selection of performance boards in stock from local and international shapers, all come with fins and free board bag. Click here.Pete is chasing waves in Indonesia. His last trip was great. Click here.We are now taking bookings for Easter surf and stay deals and womens surf and pilates weekends. Our Roxy Days are going to be running on May 8th and June 19th. Details to follow.

Looks like we are stuck in another northerly airflow at the moment. It has been a poor surf week in Bundoran. There were a few waves at the beach early in the week but its been very small since then. Rumours are that north facing spots have been good yesterday and today and will probably be ok tomorrow. For Bundoran this weekend the forecast is not looking too hot. Hopefully we will have some small waves at Tullan on Sat but its 50/50. Winds are due to be offshore so if there are waves it will be small and clean. Streedagh might be worth a look. On Sunday the swell direction looks a little better so might be a few waves at Tullan again and the winds look offshore. Overall a poor weekend forecast but we should be nearing the end of this northerly spell and hopefully some spring swells on the way. Tides this weekend low (0.5m) at 11am and high (4.0m) at 5pm Enjoy!

Pete is still off on his travels. Left the quite sunny north island of NZ for the even hotter shores of the Gold Coast Aus. Just a stop on the way to the tropical shores of Bali. Lucky man.
The Surfbreaks.ie trip to Morocco all arrived back happy and surfed out. They got good waves all week. Lots of Irish people in Morocco for surf this year. Anchor Point was double to triple overhead one day and reports are the standout surfer on the day was Cain Kilcullen from Enniscrone, who is on our surf team. Good photos on the way from Daveth @ Mindscape.ie who had his camera gear on the trip.

Weekend surf forecast
We had a few surprisingly decent days here this week, even though we thought the swell was a bit too north for Bundoran. We were all packed and ready to head for a good north facing spot when we spotted good sets at a Bundoran reef. Only 2 foot but clean and barreling waves so saved us having to drive.
For the weekend looks like Saturday will be the best day. On Sat we are expecting waves in the 3 foot range at Tullan with light cross shore winds (southerly). The winds may turn a bit more variable during the day but should stay light. Probably enough swell for Rossnowlagh also but check Tullan first. On sunday the swell direction is going to be more from the north so it will miss Bundoran a bit. Should still be enough for 1-2 foot waves at Tullan with very light onshore winds so not as good as Sat.
Tides this weekend high (3.4m) at 10am and low (1.1m) at 4pm Enjoy!

wetsuit reviews

We got our team rider Cian to review the O'Neill Psycho Freak 4.5/3.5 and staff member Shane reviewed the Xcel Infiniti hooded 5/4/3. Both suits have their own selling points. Sounds like it may be a case of the Freak for the groms and competition surfers, and Infiniti for us older folk?

O'Neill Psycho Freak 4.5/3.5
The O’Neil psychofreak is definitely the warmest and best wetsuit I have ever had. But my favourite thing about the wetsuit is it is only a 4.5 3.5 and this makes it really flexible. I would recommend this suit for anybody who would like a really warm suit and for it to be flexible. It is perfect for all the groms.
Costs €374 at Bundoran Surf Co.
By Cian Logue.

Xcel Infiniti Hooded 5/4/3
The Xcel infiniti wetsuits have been on the market here in Ireland for the past four years or so. Within this period they have established a reputation for keeping surfers warm and in the water for longer on even the coldest days in the depths of winter.
The model I went for this year is the 5.4.3 infiniti hooded. The suit is very comfortable and extremely warm! I have had an xcel suit before but used a different suit all last winter. This break fom xcel suits made me appreciate how warm they actually are. I noticed that between sets, when I would usually be hunched up with my hands stuck in my armpits for warmth, I was instead comfortable and my muscles were relaxed. Another pleasant surprise was that my session ended due to tired arms and not the onslaught of Hypothermia!
Although xcel suits are perceived by Irish surfers as being amongst the warmest on the market, I have heard some surfers question there flexibility. I found my suit plenty flexible. The fact of the matter is that your body is going to be more flexible when your warm and there is steady blood flow through your muscles. Maybe if your Kelly Slater you might feel limited by the slight extra weight in this suit. But then again if you were Kelly Slater you’d probably head off to Hawaii for Jan/Feb rather than staying here freezing your nuts off!
Costs €335 at Bundoran Surf Co.

Weekend surf forecast jan 8th 2010
It has been a poor few weeks of surfing since before Christmas. There have been waves at Tullan most days but quite small.

Good here this morning, at last, with 4 foot and offshore waves. The weekend is looking ok. Sat should be shoulder high and clean at Tullan. Best in the afternoon as the tide drops out and the wind goes more easterly. Maybe a small wave at Rossnowlagh and flat at Streedagh. Sunday will be a bit bigger and should be head high at tullan, maybe a little bigger, and Rossnowlagh should have a small wave but again flat at Streedagh. Maybe a small wave at some reef breaks on Sun but its 50/50.

Overall, better than it has been so hopefully things are turning around on the surf front. Loads of swells in the Atlantic but the northerly airflows are keeping them away from us.

Tides this weekend high (3.2m) at 1pm and low (1.5m) at 7pm. Enjoy!

Zoe from ISA has done out a few tips for winter surfing. For more info check out www.isasurf.ie

Winter Safety Message

With winter upon us once again surfers need to be more cautious as conditions become more extreme. Colder water and air temperatures combined with swells that are powerful, winds that are more severe and currents that are more treacherous make winter surfing more dangerous.
Leave the “gun-ho” attitude at home and make safety your priority. Do not be pressurised by others to paddle-out in conditions that you are uncomfortable with. Recognise and respect your own ability and experience.
Before you go surfing check the forecast and heed weather warnings.
Safe Surfing Guidelines
• If you are new to surfing take a lesson at an ISA Approved School or Club. Here you will be introduced to the sport in a safe environment.
• Do not attempt surfing unless you can swim.
• Do not surf alone or enter the water as dusk is approaching or if you have been drinking alcohol.
• Always let somebody on land know where you have gone and when you will return.
• Check the weather and tides before you paddle out. Learn to observe the ocean so you can identify rips, wind changes and other hazards.
• If you are unfamiliar with a break check with local surfers or other water users before paddling out. • Ensure the waves you are surfing are of a size and power suitable to your ability. Do not get too confident. Stick to beaches until you become experienced.
• Make sure your equipment, especially your leash is in good order. Remember it is much easier to spot a brightly coloured surfboard or wetsuit at sea in the event of you requiring rescuing. Consider other safety equipment- nose guard & helmet.
• When you “wipeout” do not come to the surface too soon and when you do come to the surface protect your head with your arms.
• Always check behind you for other water users before abandoning your surfboard to dive under a wave.
• If you get caught in a rip do not try to paddle against it, paddle across it.
• If you find yourself in difficulty stay calm, do not discard your board, wave one are in the air and shout to attract attention. Do not panic help will come.
• Always respect our rescue services. Should you see a surfer in difficulty in the water DON’T DELAY phone 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard. Even the most experienced surfer may at some time require assistance.
• Every surfer should attain water safety and first aid training. Such training will help prevent you from getting into difficulty and will enable you to react appropriately if you encounter another water user in difficulty.
• Be aware of other water users and always show respect regardless of craft. Above all, keep a good attitude, be friendly and apologise if you make a mistake
